Dave Marcouiller

Biography

My research, teaching, and outreach programs examine economic linkages and public policies that address the nexus between natural resource management and community development. In addition, my work examines the role and impact of outdoor recreation and tourism in rural multi-functional landscapes. Long-standing interests include resource dependency, forestry issues, and rural amenity-driven residential development with particular focus on resulting tradeoffs and alternative land use compatibilities. In addition, I have worked with various regional economic and social models to assess the impacts of policy and economic change in rural areas.

My work deals with issues of resource-dependency and the unique planning needs of remote rural regions. Current areas of research include amenity-based rural development, land use compatibility & conflict, integrative tourism planning, and outdoor recreation. My extension programs address developmental issues associated with amenity migration, the compatibility of alternative natural resource uses, forestry and wood products, outdoor recreation planning, water economics, and tourism analysis. I teach a variety of graduate courses including methods of planning analysis, regional economic problem analysis, integrative tourism planning, and, upon occasion, our planning workshop.

I have a joint, integrated appointment as a State Extension Specialist with the University of Wisconsin – Cooperative Extension
providing technical assistance to an array of local clients throughout the Lake States. In particular, I work closely with the network of community resource development educators on the variety of issues listed above. In addition, I am an affiliate with the UW–Madison Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies.

Formally trained in agricultural economics (PhD), forest policy (MS),and resource management (BS), my analytical work focuses on the linkages between natural resources and rural economic development with a particular interest in the mechanisms behind income generation and distribution to rural households. In addition to planning, I interact professionally in related fields of regional science, resource economics, community development, natural resource management, and tourism/recreation/leisure science.

Since coming to Wisconsin, Prof. Marcouiller’s has been active in an array of applied research & outreach projects generating extra-mural funds totalling over $1.4 million (USD). A selected list includes:

OUTREACH TEACHING

In my capacity as a State Extension Specialist, I teach adults in an array of venues throughout the State of Wisconsin. My clientele are highly varied; primarily they include county-based UW-Extension Educators, State and Local Government Officials, resource management professionals, private-sector entrepreneurs, and the general public. My primary outreach teaching and technical assistance are focused within the following three thematic areas:
