Tips for Grads: Approaching new people while networking

By Luke Stavedahl, MS student

Networking events can be intimidating, especially when you’re faced with the daunting task of striking up conversations with strangers. However, mastering the art of conversation can open doors to invaluable opportunities and connections. Here are some tips to help you navigate networking events with confidence:

  • Ask open-ended questions: Instead of sticking to yes or no questions, opt for open-ended ones that encourage more elaborate responses. This can lead to more engaging conversations and provide you with insights into the other person’s interests and experiences.
  • Find common ground: Look for shared interests, experiences, or backgrounds that you can use as a springboard for conversation. Whether it’s a mutual acquaintance, a similar academic field, or a hobby, finding common ground can help establish rapport.
  • Listen actively: Don’t just focus on what you’re going to say next. Instead, listen attentively to what the other person is saying. This demonstrates genuine interest and fosters meaningful connections.
  • Practice active body language: Maintain open body language, make eye contact, and nod occasionally to show that you’re engaged in the conversation. This non-verbal communication can convey confidence and approachability.

Remember, other attendees at events are looking to network as well. Approach each interaction with authenticity and curiosity, and you’ll be well on your way to forging valuable connections that can benefit you throughout your academic and professional journey.
