Planner (Community Development Department) – Clive, IA

Under the general supervision of the senior planner, the planner will perform a variety of routine and complex technical work associated with both long-range planning (comprehensive planning/neighborhood planning/code development), current planning (permitting/development review/customer service), and geographic information system activities. Works with the community development department co-workers to accomplish various planning, zoning, building permitting, and code enforcement assignments and activities. Performs other duties as required.

  • Compiles information and completes required reports; organizes and presents at public meetings.
  • Corresponds with outside agencies and others and attends meetings as necessary.
  • Reviews development and zoning permit applications, completes reports and assists with the Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustment, and City Council meetings.
  • Operates computer-based geographic information system to enter, edit, manage, analyze, report and display information.
  • Researches, compiles and analyzes spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate high quality cartographic output into documents and reports.
  • Assists, participates, implements and manages complex and sensitive planning projects, including coordination of stakeholder engagement and consultant management efforts.
  • Writes technical reports, policy documents and/or ordinances based on sound planning principles.
  • Explains and provides guidance regarding applicable codes within the area of responsibility to architects, engineers, contractors and other interested parties.
  • Continues development as a planner, learning about new technologies and improving operations and efficiency.
  • Regular attendance is essential for this position.
