Enhancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Urban Planning Event

Please join us for an event with Kendra Smith, Ph.D., author of the 2019 American Planning Association report, “More and Better: Increasing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Planning.” Dr. Smith will speak and lead an interactive session about the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as the legacy of racism in urban planning and policy and how this can be seen and felt today.
In this interactive talk, we will discuss the habits of mind and practical actions that help planners create meaningful diversity and actively work toward equity and inclusion within their organizations and in planning outcomes.

Learning outcomes:1. Participants will understand the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion in planning organizations. Each concept is unique, and they contribute different things to planning organizations and processes.
2. Participants will understand the legacy of racism in urban planning and policy and remnants of such actions that can be seen and felt today.
3. Participants will analyze and apply DE&I principles to urban planning.

This event is co-hosted by the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture at the University of Wisconsin–Madison with the Wisconsin Student Planning Association and the Urban and Regional Planning Alumni Relations Council.
