JOB DESCRIPTION
Rate: $11 to $13 per hour
The Renz Lab in the UW – Madison Agronomy Department is searching for an individual to work 30 – 40 hours per week from mid-May through the end of August to assist with various research and outreach projects. The potential to continue working up to 15 hours per week during the following school year is an option.
This position is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on field and laboratory experience focused on invasive plant research conducted in a variety of locations throughout Wisconsin. Applicants can expect to gain competence in native and invasive plant identification, plant surveying and experimental protocols, and an understanding of invasive plant biology and control.
To qualify for this position, applicants must be enrolled at an accredited institution (University, Junior College, High School) for Fall of 2019. Applicants may arrange to receive credit from their institution. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to work long hours in the field. Ability to occasionally lift >50 pounds is required.
Primary Duties:
Assist in the setup, application of treatments, and data collection for experiments involving the control of invasive plants and revegetation with desirable species. Duties will vary depending on the experiment, but will involve working on a small team using transects, counts, and biomass assessments to measure the response of vegetation to treatments. Duties will also include independently entering and summarizing data with data management software. Opportunities to participate in outreach activities with stakeholders and the public will occur throughout the summer.
Secondary duties:
Assist in other projects occurring within the Renz Lab. These include research on alfalfa and rotational grazing.
Special Considerations:
- Duties may take place in adverse outdoor conditions and will often occur off of the UW Campus; transportation will be provided to off-campus locations
- Applicants must have a valid driver’s license
- Applicants must have ability to work the entire day in the field
- Safety equipment will be provided
